Grandpa’s 85th birthday was Sunday. We played a little golf at Swan Hills in the Rockford area. Not a bad course. It has yet to grow into it’s surroundings, the trees haven’t matured, but there is good potential as the greens are very challenging. Grandpa was the only one playing without a cart, I believe. Everyone should wish to be so healthy at his age.
Speaking of healthy, coming off heart surgery Ralph Wolter won the first major of the season on the Dundore Tour. It was a suprise victory to everyone but Ralph. I’ll have to check the rulebook on the whole “I’ll play 9 holes in the morning before everyone shows up” deal. That’s really not fair, and as I said earlier in the week, with my David Ferrety broadcaster skills, “Ralph is retired, I want strokes”. Turns out I didn’t need all 4 as I had requested. The man got me by 1, thanks to an unbelivable short game and a strong 40 on the front 9. Mark Barnes was heard uttering, “He putts like crazy, hey, are the Cavs losing?”. Also with a good showing on the front 9 was Dana, with a 43, who reminded me that when I was 16 I told him his golf game was a mess. Well, I still play with the same clubs, and now my game is a mess. Time will teach you a lesson!
We quit on 15 so as not to miss Salamone’s recipe sausages on the barB. Quite possibly the only food on the planet, other than Bing and Bill’s ribs, worth leaving a golf course for.
Speculation among the tour beat writers was that Ralph was working with his coaches to peak in time for the 2nd and final major of the Dundore Tour 2006 season, held in Chippewa Falls July 4th weekend. A tall order to come in as the favorite. Annika Dutcher will have something to say about that, as well as a refocused yours truly.
Congrats to Grandpa and Ralph! See some of you south of the border this weekend, and the rest of you in the land of sky blue waters for the YouBetcha Open.
